CHANGES TO NON-GEOGRAPHIC NUMBERS

THE COST OF CALLING SERVICE NUMBERS HAS CHANGED

From 1 July 2015, the cost of calling service numbers has changed and the cost of a call is now made up of two clear parts:

  • A service charge: This part of the call charge is the cost of the call from the Service Operator. It is a constant charge per call type by the operator of these services and will go to the operator of the number.
  • An access charge: This part of the call charge goes to 5G for completing the call to the number, as your call provider, charged as pence per minute for all call types.

Freephone numbers, starting 0800 or 0808, will become free for consumers to call from all mobile phones and landlines.

For numbers starting 084, 087, 09 and 118, the actual cost of each call will be determined by the level of the access charge set by Redcare5G, plus a service charge set by the operator of the NGN. Yes, they apply to calls to service numbers from both mobiles and landlines.

Yes, they apply across the UK. This does not include the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, which have their own structure for these calls.

Phone companies, like 5G, will continue to have flexibility over how they charge for these calls from business phones.

All the changes happened on 1 July 2015 as a result of Ofcom changes.

The cost of calling service numbers starting 084, 087, 09, and 118 will be made clearer. The cost of these numbers will be split into two pieces: the access charge and the service charge, but shown as one cost on any billing. Calls to landlines and mobiles are not affected.

Freephone numbers beginning 0800 or 0808 will be made free for customers to call from mobiles.

Although the access charge may vary between telecom providers like Redcare5G, it will always be the same for calls you make to the affected numbers within your tariff or call plan. Call plans will still incorporate the revised charges within any inclusive packages.

With this change, that came into effect on 1 July 2015, Companies and Organisations that provide services using 084, 087, 09 or 118 numbers will be required to communicate the charges clearly.
Wherever they advertise or promote one of these services, they must ensure that the service charge is displayed in a prominent position, and in close proximity to the telephone number.

The service charge to call a particular number will be the same no matter which telephone or provider you call from. The service charge is set by the Company/Organisation that provides the service that you are calling.
